Custom-made wreaths give “wow factor” to holiday decorations

Sara Lucas, owner of Petals, Ribbons & Beyond on 12th Street in Brookland, ensures local homes are on the “best dressed” list during the holidays. Ms. Lucas offers custom-made wreaths colorfully and elaborately decorated by hand.

Each wreath is decorated with a creative assortment of ornaments that might include ribbons, bows, pine cones, christmas ornaments, fruit, flowers, snowflakes, and even birds.

Ms. Lucas said the holidays are her favorite time of year. “Everyone is more cheerful and there is a feeling of expectation in the air,” she said.

Ms. Lucas said she has been making handcrafted wreaths for a decade, but they have really caught on in the last 3-4 years because “the wreaths can really reflect your personality.” Ms. Lucas said customers give her a color scheme and she decorates the wreath accordingly. “Red and white are no longer the traditional colors of the holiday” said Ms. Lucas. “We get requests for silver, gold, bronze, blue and burgundy—we even have people order burgundy and gold for the Redskins.”

Ms. Lucas described wreath-making as a mixture of art and science. “The wreath has to be beautiful, but it also has to last the entire season,” she said.

Ms. Lucas said customers can place orders by phone or in person at her shop located at 390612th Street NE, next to San Antonio Bar and Grill. She said wreaths cost from $50 to $150. Both fresh mixed evergreen wreaths and artificial wreaths are available.

Ms. Lucas said it takes 48 hours for wreaths to be ready for pick-up or delivery.
