To the Editor:
Regarding your February story on the Streetscape Improvement Project on 12th St. and the state of the sidewalks, I think there is another major issue occurring which deserves attention. The new streetlights which have been hung are a disaster.
The lamps were hung at differing heights depending on the pole, and attached to poles which are at differing depths back from 12th St. At 12th and Girard Street, in fact, one of the lamps is hung sideways, over Girard instead of 12th, due to the fact that this pole is closer to Girard than 12th. Similarly at Kearney, a light was hung at a 45 degree angle, something which makes no sense whatsoever.
On top of that, south of Monroe Street all of the dedicated lampposts that were installed are far too high (2 stories). This is the same height and design of streetlights as used in the recent renovation of M Street SW near the Nationals baseball stadium. M Street is a major artery, and the much narrower 12th Street should have much shorter lampposts than this.
The resulting lightscape is a mishmash of unattractive, uneven globes.

I applaud The Heartbeat. I can imagine the time and effort (and some frustration) that are invested with each publication. BRAVO!! Keep up the good work.
