Dance Place Celebrates 22nd Annual DanceAfrica DC
Celebration Features Performances, Master Classes, and an Authentic African Marketplace
The 22nd annual DanceAfrica DC celebration is coming to Dance Place, June 1-7. The yearly event features master classes, performances, events for families with children, and an outdoor African marketplace. Many of the events are free. For many in Ward 5 and around the District, DanceAfrica DC is an event not to be missed. According to a Dance Place press release, the purpose of the event is to “promote a greater understanding of African culture and illuminate its importance to this city and the nation.” The week-long festival is MC’d by the legendary Chuck Davis. Master classes are taught by highly respected African dance teachers. The weekend of June 6-7 offers a number of activities for people of all ages, including morning master classes, an authentic African marketplace, and free outdoor performances. Ticketed indoor performances are also part of the week-long program. Participating artists include: Griot Baba Chuck Davis, African Heritage Dancers & Drummers, Coyaba Dance Theater, Dance Place Step Team, Ezibu Muntu African Dance Company, Farafina Kan, KanKouran West African Dance Company, Lesole’s Dance Project, Sankofa Dance Theater, Soul In Motion Players, Inc., Tam Tam Mandinique, Aysha Upchurch and life, rhythm, move, Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers, Elton Pittman, Dom Pakka Chikki Ensemble, Andrew Cacho African Drummers and Dancers, Inc., After the Storm, and Beat Your Feet. |
