To outsiders, Brookland resembles a quiet enclave filled with tree-lined streets and old-fashioned homes. Locals understand, however, that Brookland’s suburban landscape can be misleading: the neighborhood is inseparable from the richness and complexities of urban life.

No one knows this better than LeTroy Durrett, also known as “Blade Brown.” Mr. Durrett, 23, grew up in Brookland at 9th and Evarts Street. He turned his personal experiences living in Brookland into music, which he has released on two mix tapes.

Mr. Durrett’s latest release, “Societies Product,” is an ode to growing up in Brookland and finding inspiration in the neighborhood. “It raised me,” said Mr. Durrett.

In Mr. Durrett’s view, Brookland is unique among neighborhoods in the Washington DC area. “You go to the store and they really know you by your first name. I wouldn’t want to live nowhere else,” he said.

Mr. Durrett said his life reached a turning point on November 26, 1998, at age 12, when his older brother was shot and killed. Mr. Durrett vividly recalls the experience of finding his brother at 4th and Franklin Street.

Instead of following in his brother’s footsteps, Mr. Durrett chose a different future. “I just took all of my frustration and anger and turned to music,” he said.

Examples of tracks on Mr. Durrett’s latest release include “B-L-A-D-E” and “All These Tearz,” a song dedicated to Keith Nelson, Mr. Durrett’s friend from Slowe Elementary School, who died in a fire on January 1st.

Mr. Durrett’s buddy, Chris Lane, swears by his friend’s new release, calling it “amazing.” Mr. Lane, a student at Catholic University, said “everyone at my school has been listening to it.”
