Non-Stop June Events in Brookland
Summer Begins with a Series of Events & Activities Not To Be Missed Don't miss out on these events and activities in Brookland that kick off summer. There is something for everyone to enjoy!
June 1st: Brookland House and Garden Tour
The 8th annual Houses and Gardens Tour of Brookland goes Mod! Sponsored by The Greater Brookland Garden Club (GBGC), the event will take place on Sunday, June 1st from 1-5pm. In addition to the Queen Anne, Victorian and Arts & Crafts style houses that we all love, Brookland is home to a number of new expressions in Modern Architecture. Several of these newly built Modern designs will be on the tour in addition to more traditional homes. Homeowners and Garden Club docents will be available at each property to provide details and answer questions as you tour the interior and exterior of the featured homes. The event will be held rain or shine. All profits from the tour are used for maintenance of community gardens and tree boxes.
Tickets are $12 pre-event and $15 the day of the tour. Buy your tickets at Petals, Ribbons & Beyond, 3906 12th St NE (12th & Quincy St NE) from 9:30am to 6:00pm, Monday thru Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays. Tickets will be on sale at the store on Sunday, June 1st from 10am to 3pm.
June 7th: Brookland Fire Station Dedication & Open House
Brookland’s fire station will be dedicated in honor of Jackson H. Gerhart, the longest serving member of Engine Co. 17. An open house celebration will take place after the 1pm dedication ceremony. Bring the whole family to enjoy free hot dogs and hamburgers grilled by the world renowned DC Fire Department barbecue team. Rita’s will be serving up cool and delicious Italian ices. And for the kids, the Fire Department plans to bring out a special slide that is two storeys tall! “It’s pretty darn impressive,” said Lieutenant James Seavey.
Combined with the opportunity to climb on fire engines and meet real firefighters and medics, this event is guaranteed to be a fantastic time for the whole family.
June 7th-8th: DanceAfrica DC & African Marketplace
DC’s 21st annual festival celebrates the dance and music of the African Diaspora, honoring both traditional heritage and contemporary forms. At the festival, the vitality and richness of African culture is experienced through dance, music, visual arts, food, clothing and crafts. African Marketplace. An African Marketplace will take place on June 7th & 8th, from 1pm-sundown, adjacent to Dance Place. Clothing, artwork, jewelry and food will be available. FREE Outdoor Events. No tickets required. Bring a lawn chair/blanket. Indoor Performances. Purchase tickets for performance on June 7th & 8th, 3pm & 8pm. Performers include: Griot Baba Chuck Davis, Oscar Rousseaux, Melvin Deal, Farafina Kan, Sankofa Dance Theatre, DC Casineros, Soul in Motion, Gesel Mason, Aysha Upchurch, and more.
Target Series Matinee Tickets: $25 day of, $20 in advance, $10 children 17 and under (part of the Target Family Series – each paying adult may reserve a FREE ticket for one child 12 & under.) Evening performance Tickets: $30 day of show, $25 in advance, $10 children 17 and under.
June 8th: Sunday Farmer's Market
By popular demand, the Sunday farmer’s market is returning to Brookland, operated by the Greater Brookland Garden Club. Located outdoors in the 1200 block of Newton Street NE (next to CVS), you will have the opportunity to browse and buy fresh produce, baked goods, and plants from nearby farmers. The open-air market takes place on Sundays from June through October. The first market will take place on Sunday, June 8th, from 10am - 3pm. Don’t miss this free, fun and healthy way buy fresh goods and meet your with neighbors.
