District Officials Testify about Failed Brookland Program

District officials testified before the DC Council about a stalled grant program in Brookland, blaming the program’s failure on Brookland businesses. Phyllis Love, the DC official who oversees the prorgam, was non-committal about the program’s future.

Councilmember Hosts Ward 5 Economic Develompent Summit
Five businesses in Ward 5 were selected to receive the “Small Business Spotlight” award from Wal-Mart and the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GWHCC). The awards were announced at the Ward 5 Economic Development Summit held by Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. in February.

Saint Anthony's Is Here to Stay
In 2007 the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington DC announced plans to reduce the number of urban, Catholic primary schools it operates in the District. St. Anthony’s, at the corner of 12th and Lawrence Street in Brookland, is one of four District schools chosen by the Archdiocese to remain operational as a Catholic school.


New Restaurant and Lounge Coming to Woodridge
Opening a small business is notoriously difficult — just ask Ward 5 resident Ty Simpson. For more than two years Mr. Simpson has been working to open a restaurant and lounge at 2026 and 2028 Rhode Island Avenue NE.
